ART CANOE

I loved working on an Hour of Code with 5th Grade. We used Google docs to share links to various learning modules. Students saved their Hour of Code certificates as .pdfs to their Google Drives.

Students are working on a collaborative, cross-curricular animation project featuring the Odyssey epic. They are working during both Art and LASS periods. Students use iPads(in copy stand mount) and the iStopmotion app to creation animated video clips. These will then be edited in iMovie on iPads or MacBook Pros.

Students are working on their ofrendas using the Canva app or building a 3D model. Robin Williams, Marie Curie, and President Roosevelt are some of the people being commemorated.

The fourth graders are working on Cubistic self portraits. They are learning about the process of abstraction, Picasso, and Cubism. Students are making connections in how Cubist artists were inspired by West African masks. Below are examples of resources we are looking at in class and students creating their own self portraits.

Dia de los Muertos As a short seasonal projects, students in 5th-7th grades are working on cross-curricular (Spanish/Art) Day of the Dead projects. Fifth graders are working on masks. Sixth graders are working on 3-D or digital ofrendas commemorating those who have passed. Seventh graders are working printmaking designs based papel de picado and sugar skulls. 7th graders are working on a digital self portrait using either the Chrome app, Pixlr, or Photoshop. I have set up several tutorial options to help students get familiar with the apps in addition to live class demos. I made a video screencastn(uploaded to Youtube) of my Pixlr demo and used Aweseome screenshot to make a cheatsheet. I set a Youtube playlist of various Pixlr demos and made a audiocast as well. The semi-flipped art classroom involves having a variety digital resources available to students in a central location. Students can use the resources to review, preview, extend, research and enrich their learning. If students are absent, the resources can be available for students to catch up on missed work. The final example below displays other ways art teachers can use the flipped classroom model. Canvas used for three different live paint demos. (Skitch app was used to add text on kindle photo) Text added with Skitch  and used in Haiku to explain warm/cool color theory. Example of video tutorial used in Google classroom and Haiku learning.

Since parents don't often get to see the art process, time lapse videos are an excellent way to share the classroom creativity. A tripod was not used. This helped the students be less aware of what I might be taking a photo or video. My students become quite familiar with how digital devices are used as tools in the art classroom. I try to model this for my students in using devices for flipped classroom videos, blogging, sharing links, and research. This timelapse shows a student drawing her gecko composition and painting on a canvas. She had just finished her gecko sketch in her sketch journal.

During the month of September, I had a photography exhibit at the Schaumburg Central Library. This is the second largest library in the state of Illinois. The landscape photos depict the desolate, winter Chicago lakefront, Cook County forest preserves and the Maine coast. Other photos depict my classroom and my Chicagoland jaunts. I will have another exhibit at the Prairie Center for the Arts (Schaumburg) in January 2016. Enjoy the exhibit video!

Students are working on adding impasto or thick brush strokes to their still life paintings. They observed a live paint demo and a video demo(below) as well. They also filled out a midpoint rubric reflection based on 4 different painting criteria.
