Dia de los Muertos

As a short seasonal projects, students in 5th-7th grades are working on cross-curricular (Spanish/Art) Day of the Dead projects. Fifth graders are working on masks. Sixth graders are working on 3-D or digital ofrendas commemorating those who have passed. Seventh graders are working printmaking designs based papel de picado and sugar skulls. Below is a video that explains some of the Day of the Dead traditions and symbolism.

6th Grade Paper Brain Models

As my school joins the maker and stem movement, more and more of collegial conversations focus on student projects as problem solving. The need for students to understand and to manipulate materials is imperative. One such project incorporates all of these ideas. It is the origami paper brain model by Martin Pyka. 5th Grade students are studying writing systems. Today we looked at this beautiful tile that has calligraphic writing! 5th Grade: Art History and Research

5th graders are researching dragons from different cultures. The students are creating a collaborative Google Slide presentation with their research summaries and original sketches. Next week, they will create their own illustrations and interpretations of St. George and the Dragon.
