8th Grade Art

December Haiku Video

This involves students writing a haiku and then creating a video with 5/7/5 video clip that symbolically represent the haiku.

8th graders finished their Haiku videos. They were required to include different shots, text, and soundtracks. They could also experiment with stop motion animation, iMovie, Doink Green Screen app, slowing/speeding video clips, transitions, sound effects, and still shots. iPads, iPhones, and Macbook Pros were used to complete these 17 second videos.

Students looked at Rueben Wu's photos (above) and Ansel Adams' photos. They had to analyze their photos according the principles of art and design.

Students worked on this photography assignment using recently purchased DSLRS as a way learn about aperture, exposure time, and ISO.

September 2013/October 2013

Students finished their realistic self portrait drawings. They chose their own subject composition: hoodie, personal still life, extreme close up, or standard head portrait. They are now working on a transformed or narrative drawing series.

April 2013

After watching A Strong Clear Vision about Maya Lin's Vietnam War Memorial, students created their own monument/memorials. Some reflect popular culture; others represent more more serious themes. After creating their designs, students presented their designs in class or via www.voicethread.com (cloud based audio and media recorder). Examples are below.

Watch Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision - Trailer on PBS. See more from POV.

6th Grade Paper Brain Models

As my school joins the maker and stem movement, more and more of collegial conversations focus on student projects as problem solving. The need for students to understand and to manipulate materials is imperative. One such project incorporates all of these ideas. It is the origami paper brain model by Martin Pyka. Examples below are from my 6th gr. class. http://www.martinpyka.de/paperbrain/

Met Museum's Amazing Collection: Writing Systems

5th Grade students are studying writing systems. Today we looked at this beautiful tile that has calligraphic writing!  Ramadan Mubarak to all who celebrate ✨ In honor of the start of #Ramadan , a look at this stunning #mihrab , or prayer niche. One of the earliest, finest examples of mosaic tilework, it was made by joining cut glazed tiles to produce intricate arabesque and calligraphic designs. pic.twitter.com/avvZ6DzQV0 — The Metropolitan Museum of Art (@metmuseum) April 13, 2021
