Watercolor
We are starting a watercolor project based on Winslow Homer. This video brings up many details about his life and paintings including Maine, Homer's Civil War illustrations and his European Studies.Personal Symbols, Surrealism, and Umbrellas,
Students worked on creating their own personal symbols. These will be incorporated into their own Surrealistic umbrella. They started painting the umbrella painting background using a limited palette of analogous colors (three colors next to each other on the color wheel. We looked at Miro and Max Ernst.

Face Mugs and Modular Furniture
Students worked on face mugs during December. In January, they started on a joint STEAM/ART project call modular furniture. They worked on design concepts, isometric drawings, pretotypes, and prototypes. Using, Tinkercad, 3D Tin, Google Sketchup, and Pixlr, their final models will be produced on the laser cutter and 3D printer.
Positive/ Negative Space
We are looking at ways to improve our drawing and compositional skills through positive and negative space.

Students are working on watercolor paintings. They will learn three techniques including wet into wet, drybrush, and wash. Winslow Homer was the art historical focus for this project. Homer was a Civil War illustrator and worked in seaside studio after the Civil War.

The sixth graders are working on umbrellas and Japanese prints. Students combined the styles of Surrealism and Symbolism and created their own painting compositions based on these two styles.
